White or Ivory?

The bridal gown is ivory — what should the guys wear? This question has been asked by brides for years and answered in many different ways. The answer is there are exceptions to every rule and it depends on your unique situation.

Many tuxedo shops will tell you that if the dress is ivory, the shirts must be ivory or the dress will look ‘dirty’ or less white next to the groom in bright white. While this is true, it is a subtle difference in color and sometimes works. Here are some things to consider when choosing your man’s attire:

Other accessories: Will the guys be wearing vests and long ties that cover the majority of the shirt or no vest and bow ties? If the shirt is mostly covered up, mixing colors works. If the look is more open, you may want to stick to matching. Also — Mixing ivory and white is completely OK! Check out the photo below of a white shirt with ivory vest.

Skin tone: White can wash out those with lighter skin tones.

Opinion: It’s all about what you, the bride and groom, want! You chose your dress to be ivory and it will obviously look ivory in photos — so what if it’s darker than your man’s white top. A white shirt with a black tux is classic and crisp.

Planner Tip: Take a fabric swatch of the dress while shirt shopping. ‘Ivory’ can comes in all shades of cream, yellow and peach.
